An architect can be, on one hand, innovator, such as an artist, a sculptor or a writer. But on the other hand, he also plays the role of an engineer and a manager. To some extent, he may also have to undertake marketing, planning, organization, personnel and financial tasks. Like other professionals, such as doctor, accountant or lawyer, the architect assumes unlimited liabilities in addition to offering professional services to his customers.
As an innovator, an architect shall not only possess creativity and vision but also a strong sense of responsibility. With an engineer's urge to achieve a precision product and with market-sensitivity and management expertise, like those of a businessman. Therefore, an architect shall be a mixture of the above three types of individuals.
In my opinion, good design shall possess the following: Good architecture requires considerations in many aspects. Firstly, its functionality shall meet the needs of the customer and user, and the buildings shall be non-mediocre and visually pleasing, which includes the use of materials, use of space, environmental planning and detailing. These are quantifiable elements. On the other hand, good architecture lies in its ability to stimulate people's passion, make one feel comfortable and delightful and wins the applause of the public. These are the more unquantifiable elements.
An architect, who intends to design good architecture, should create works representing an unique architectural style. It should not only carry the local culture, but should also reflect the vibrant features of today's society, bringing forth the climatic feeling of the region. Ideally, we should be able to define and distill these basic design elements to create remarkable
artpieces. We can draw inspiration from the traditional culture, its colors, furniture or even the folk arts as well as based on research on modern technology and trends world wide.
To be an innovative architect of Hong Kong SAR in this new millennium, one is duty-bound to create works to reflect the spirit of the day, the people's tempo of life as well as the living and working habits of the modern society. With the changing of times, and the emergence of ever improving scientific and technological developments and new cultural trends, the architect shall take the responsibility to highlight the features unique to this age and employ new building techniques, materials and to protect the environment. As an innovator, it is self defeating for an architect if he designs a building that fails to reflect the era he lives in. If he fails to create works of meaningful value, both functionally and aesthetically, he will not be able to leave behind an architectural heritage in the city where he lives.
